About
VDC Backup allows you to browse the guest operating system file system within a machine backup, search for files, and restore the required items. You can locate and restore files from a machine restore point created either with or without guest OS file indexing.
Preparation
Before starting the restore process, ensure that:
- The backup file is available.
- You are logged in to Cloud Director.
Guide
1. From the left navigation menu, go to More, and then select VDC Backup.
2. Select Files from the menu.
3. Select the VM containing the files you want to recover.
4. Select the required date and restore point. After selecting the restore point, click Mount and wait for the mounting process to complete.
When the process is complete, the folder structure will be displayed.
5. Select the file you want to restore. In this example, the file is ping_latency_log.txt.
6. After selecting the file, the available actions appear on the ribbon. The options are described below.
Click Restore, and then choose how the selected objects should be restored:
- Overwrite: The object from the backup replaces the original object on the target machine.
- Keep: The object from the backup is restored alongside the original object on the target machine. The restored object's name includes the prefix _RESTORED_<DATE>_<TIME>, where <DATE>_<TIME> indicates the restore date and time.
- Permissions Only (Microsoft Windows): Restores the file or folder permissions granted to users and groups. This option is available only if the object already exists on the target machine.
You can also download file system objects, including files and folders, to your local machine. When you download objects, VCD Backup communicates with the backup server to extract them from the backup and saves them to the default download folder on your local machine. Multiple files are packaged in a ZIP archive named FLR_<date>_<time>.zip and stored in the same folder.
For this procedure, use the Restore action and select Keep.
7. Select Keep, and then click Yes to confirm.
8. Enter the username and password. If the account is a non-root user, elevate its privileges to root, and then click OK.
9. Wait for the restore process to complete.
10. After the restore is complete, verify on the VM that the restored file is available.
You can review the file restore history from the History menu.
